1L Internship Opportunities and Active Duty Applications Open 01 January
USAJOBS.GOV is the United States Government's website for listing civil service job opportunities with federal agencies. This is where you will find openings for civil attorney and civil paraprofessional positions with the United States Army JAG Corps. At any given time, about 1,000 attorney positions are posted on the platform. Because USAJOBS.gov serves all agencies and their open positions, here are a few tips to locate Army openings.
1. The main page of USAJOBS.gov offers two options to refine your search. You do not need a profile to conduct a search. You may narrow a search using keywords and/or location.
2. To find U.S. Army positions, search “Department of the Army” in the keywords box. This will retrieve all openings in Army commands and departments. To search for attorney positions by job title, use “attorney-advisor” or “attorney advisor” to locate civilian attorney positions. Paraprofessional positions have a variety of job titles.
3. To search by location, type the base name or “remote” in the location search box. You can also choose a city or zip code and set a filter for the number of miles within that area to widen the search. Do not put synonyms in the location bar, like “hybrid,” “virtual,” or “work from home”.
4. You must create a profile to apply for a job or save a search. Make sure your stored documents are up to date and accurate. Typical documents for attorney openings include a cover letter, resume, writing sample, and transcripts. If you are a licensed attorney, you will be asked to verify your standing with your licensing authority later in the hiring process.
5. If you are not employed by the federal government or currently in the armed forces, make sure you click “Open to the Public” in the filter column on the right side of the page.
6. When searching, learn what General Schedule (“GS”) grade best reflects your knowledge, skills, and experience. The GS system begins at 01 and ends at 15. Legal jobs are classified using the 0900 series, and each position will have a GS grade assigned. By learning the position’s GS grade, you can determine if you are an appropriate fit. To learn more about the GS system, visit the Office of Personnel Management. https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/classification-qualifications/classifying-general-schedule-positions/#url=Standards You can further narrow your search by selecting the GS rating that fits your professional status.
7. USAJOBS.gov will not show JAG Corps Summer Internship openings. Use the “APPLY” tab on this website to locate 1L and 2L summer internship openings with the JAG Corps.
8. Pay close attention to hiring deadlines. Some application periods are less than 10 days or close after a maximum number of applications are submitted. Never miss an opening by setting up alerts. To set up notifications of future openings, conduct a search using your preferred criteria, save the position search, and agree to receive future emails. You will receive emails for positions that match the search criteria you saved as the application period opens.
