Announcement of the Confirmation of Major General Joseph B. Berger III to The Judge Advocate General and appointment to Lieutenant General
 

I am pleased to officially announce, pursuant to his nomination by the President, that the United States Senate has confirmed Major General Joseph B. Berger III for appointment to Lieutenant General, after which he will assume duties as The Judge Advocate General.

Major General Joe Berger has contributed over 32 years of dedicated service to our Army and our Nation, first as a Military Police officer, then as a Judge Advocate. He has excelled with dynamic, principled, and compassionate leadership as a lawyer and a leader in challenging and diverse assignments throughout our Regiment. Major General Berger has served with distinction as Deputy Judge Advocate General, and previously as the Commanding General of our Regimental Home, The Judge Advocate General’s Legal Center and School, in Charlottesville, VA. He has uniquely served as the Staff Judge Advocate, U.S. Army Cyber Command; Chief, Investigations and Legislative Division, Office of the Chief Legislative Liaison; Chief, Plans Branch of Personnel, Plans and Training Office, Office of The Judge Advocate General; Staff Judge Advocate, Joint Special Operations Command; Deputy Team Chief and later Assistant Director, Multi-National Force-Iraq; Group Judge Advocate, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne); Chief, Criminal Law, United States Army Air Defense Artillery Center and Fort Bliss, Fort Bliss, TX; Chief, Legal Assistance, and Administrative and Operational Law Attorney, 1st Brigade, 1st Armored Division, Germany. Major General Berger’s operational deployments include Operations RESTORE HOPE (Somalia) and JOINT GUARD (Kosovo), and multiple tours in support of both Operations ENDURING FREEDOM (Afghanistan) and IRAQI FREEDOM / NEW DAWN (Iraq).

Major General Berger was selected for the Army’s Funded Legal Education Program and received his Juris Doctor degree from the George Mason University School of Law. He holds a Masters of Law in International Law (LL.M) from The Judge Advocate General’s Legal Center and School and a Master’s of Science in National Security Strategy from the National War College.

If you have not done so already, please take the opportunity to congratulate Major General Berger, his wife Brenna, and their two adult children, Caroline and Jeb, as they continue to serve the Judge Advocate General’s Corps, the United States Army, and the Nation.
