The U.S. Army Claims Service (USARCS) was established in 1963 to accompany the significant expansion of legal rights for those who experienced injury, death, or property damage or loss due to the official actions of Army employees. A Fort Meade tenant unit since 1971, USARCS’s primary mission is to
oversee the Army claims program worldwide.
Led by active-duty military personnel, with a staff of approximately 35 civilian attorneys, investigators and other claims professionals, USARCS goal is to promptly and fairly review claims by and against the Army, paying those which are meritorious, denying those which or not, and recovering funds expended by the Army because of the wrongful acts of third parties.
For example, when an Army driver is involved in a vehicle accident, Army claims personnel at the local Army installation or at USARCS investigate and determine whether the Army driver was at fault and whether settlement of a property damage and/or personal injury claim is warranted. Likewise, where the Army property is damaged or its personnel must be hospitalized because of the fault of others, Army claims personnel attempt to recover the costs.
Claims examiners at the Army’s Center for Personnel Claims Support (a subordinate organization of USARCS) at Fort Knox, KY, review and adjudicate claims filed by Army personnel for incident to service damage.
By fulfilling its mission, USARCS saves the Army and the taxpayer the time and expense of litigation and promotes an important morale-building function for Army personnel and their Families.
