I am pleased to announce the impending promotion of Colonel Jaime A. Areizaga to Brigadier General and appointment as Special Assistant to the General Counsel, National Guard Bureau.
 
Colonel Areizaga’s exemplary career, spanning over 24 years, serves as a testament to his superb skills as a Judge Advocate and Army officer. In his previous assignments, Colonel Areizaga has served as Commander, National Guard Bureau (NGB), Legal Support Office, District of Columbia National Guard (DCNG), Temple Army Readiness Center (TARC), Arlington, Virginia; Commander, 352nd Judge Advocate Headquarters (TDS) Team, DCNG, Washington, DC; Staff Judge Advocate, Joint Forces Headquarters, District of Columbia, Washington, DC; Senior Defense Counsel, Legal Assistance Counsel, and Judge Advocate, Joint Forces Headquarters, District of Columbia, Washington, DC; and Judge Advocate, Headquarters Detachment, District Area Regional Command, Washington, DC. In his civilian capacity, Colonel Areizaga serves as Virginia’s Deputy Secretary of Veterans and Defense Affairs, where, when not on military leave, he advised Governors McAuliffe and Northam in ensuring Virginia remains the most “military-friendly” state. In November of 2018, he assumed his current role as Chief, ARNG-TDS.
 
Colonel Areizaga’s military awards include the Meritorious Service Medal (2), Army Commendation Medal (2), Air Force Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, and the Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal (7). Colonel Areizaga was commissioned in 1991 as a 2LT through the Army’s Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC). He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Foreign Service, International Politics: Law & Organization from Georgetown University and his law degree from Stanford University. Colonel Areizaga also holds a Masters of Science (MS) in Security and Defense from the Inter-American Defense College, a MS from the National Academy of Political and Strategic Studies of Chile, and a Masters of Arts in Latin American Studies from Stanford University. Colonel Areizaga is a 2007 White House Fellow assigned to the Department of the Treasury, served as the Senior Attorney Adviser at the Office of the General Counsel at USAID, and is a graduate of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College. He is a member of the Virginia, New York, and Maryland State Bars, the Bar of the District of Columbia, and the Bar of the U.S. Supreme Court. A native of Puerto Rico, Colonel Areizaga is fluent in Spanish, Portuguese, French, and conversational in Italian.
