2023 BRIGADIER GENERAL WAYNE E. ALLEY MILITARY LAW MOOT COURT COMPETITION

Fourteen teams competed in the inaugural Brigadier General Wayne E. Alley Military Law Moot Court Competition hosted by the U.S. Army Advocacy Center at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. The teams were tasked with a simulated military justice appeal. Each team drafted an appellate brief prior to arrival to the competition. All teams competed in three rounds of oral advocacy in courtrooms at the U.S. Army Advocacy Center and the Army Court of Criminal Appeals at Fort Belvoir. After the third round, eight teams advanced to a quarterfinal. Four teams then advanced to a semifinal. On the third day of competition, two teams advanced to the finals. Wake Forest University School of Law and Texas Tech University School of Law argued before a five-judge panel. Chief Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces, Honorable Kevin A. Ohlson; Department of Veteran Affairs Veterans Law Judge, Honorable Paulette V. Burton; Chief Trial Judge of the United States Army, COL Tyesha Smith; former Chief Trial Judge of the United States Army and retired Special Master in the U.S. Court of Federal Claims’ Office of Special Masters, COL Denise K. Vowell; and Professor and Head for the Department of Law at the United States Military Academy, COL Winston Williams sat for the simulated appeal. After a competitive round of appellate oral advocacy, Texas Tech University School of Law was announced as the competition winner.
