Announcement of Death – Colonel Donald S. O’Neil, US Army, Retired

It is with deep sadness that I inform you of the death of Colonel (Retired) Donald S. O’Neil. COL O’Neil died on 4 May 2011, in San Antonio, Texas. He was 92 years old.

Born in Indianapolis, Indiana, COL O’Neil grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. COL O’Neil, a World War II veteran, joined the Judge Advocate General’s Corps after graduating from Marquette University Law School. He served the JAG Corps in a variety of assignments, including service as an instructor at the Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and a military judge. COL O’Neil served in the Army for more than thirty years, retiring in 1978. After his retirement, COL O’Neil continued his education and earned a masters degree in anthropology from the University of Texas at San Antonio.

COL O’Neil was a devoted and much-loved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He will be deeply missed by many. He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann; seven children, Timothy, Donald, Jr., Sean, Patrick, Peggy, Rory, and Danny; fifteen grandchildren; and his brother, Jack. He was preceded in death by his son, Terence.

Rosary will be held on Thursday, 12 May at 0830 at the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 600 Oblate, San Antonio, Texas 78216, followed by a funeral mass at 0900. Interment will be at the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in the name of COL Donald O’Neil to the Brooke Army Medical Center, Attention: Gift Coordinator, 3851 Roger Brooke Drive, Fort Sam Houston, Texas 78234.
