BASIC ENVIRONMENTAL LAW COURSE: 22 - 26 July 2024

DEADLINE FOR REGISTRATION: 7 June 2024

The Basic Environmental Law Course (ELC, 23-A) is scheduled for 22 – 26 Jul 2024 and will be held at the Air Force Judge Advocate General's School, Maxwell AFB, AL.

ELC is designed for attorneys entering the field of environmental law who are (or will be) primarily responsible for resolving environmental law issues. This course aims to enhance attendees' ability to comprehend and analyze basic principles and concepts of federal environmental law. The course is conducted by AFJAGS and the Air Force Environmental Law Field Support Center. Presenters are anticipated to include representatives from the Air Force, Army, Navy, and Marines.

The Army faces daunting environmental legal challenges. Myriad environmental laws impact installation facilities, training, and mission. A combination of federal, state, and local concerns influence how military installations control contamination, manage hazardous waste, reduce pollution, and analyze environmental impacts. This engaging 5-day program provides military legal practitioners with a roadmap for navigating this complex legal area. The course covers not just the statutes and regulations; it develops legal leaders to work with internal and external players, regulators from the Environmental Protection Agency, state and local officials, in addition to Army Environmental Law Division subject matter experts.

Army members must register through the Army Environmental Law Division. Please submit your name, grade, full Social Security Number, unit, contact information, and state bar information in an encrypted email to Ms. Jennifer Meadows NLT 7 June 2024. The state name and bar number are needed if you'd like to receive CLE. ELD will determine OML for attendees but Air Force has final approval of number of attendees. If you are unable to send an encrypted email, you are welcome to utilize Teams to provide your information.

Attendees are responsible for their own TDY expenses. There is no fee for attending the course. Students are assigned billeting by the Air Force, and should not separately obtain lodging. Students should arrive on Sunday, 21 July. The course does not end until noon on the 26th, and you should not plan to depart prior to that time. The Air Force will confirm your attendance with a welcome letter, which will provide information on uniform, lodging, and other details.
