COME JOIN THE ARMY JAG CORPS TEAM!

APPLICATION PROCESS

To be considered for an Active Duty, Army Reserve, or Internship position, interested applicants must submit an application AND conduct an interview prior to the application deadline.  Applicants are required to set up an interview on their own.  Interviews are NOT scheduled for applicants by the Judge Advocate Recruiting Office.

Applicants interested in being considered for selection for both Active Duty and Army Reserve service should select the Combined Active Duty and Army Reserve application option.  This option allows the applicant to submit only one application which is then considered independently by both selection boards.  There is no preference or penalty given to applicants using the Combined option.

TIMEFRAME

THE 1L INTERN PROGRAM APPLICATION IS NOW OPEN!  All interviews must be conducted between January 11, 2021 and February 26, 2021.  Do not wait until the last minute to schedule an interview or submit your application.  Submitting your application early allows JARO more time to conduct a completeness review, ensuring you will have sufficient time to make any corrections necessary so your application can be considered by the board.

The next application cycle for Active Duty, Army Reserve, and 2L Intern Program positions will open on August 1, 2021 and close on October 1, 2021.

CONDUCT AN INTERVIEW

All applicants must interview with an Army Judge Advocate designated as a Field Screening Officer (FSO).

Current law students should first speak with their Career Services Office to determine whether interviews will be scheduled through the CSO or directly with the FSO.  All other applicants should contact the appropriate FSO located physically closest to them.  Keep in mind that the closest FSO may be in a neighboring state.  Although interviews will not be conducted in person, this way of assigning interviews is necessary to ensure they are evenly distributed among FSOs.

Summer Internship applicants must interview with an Active Duty FSO.  The FSO list for 1L Intern Program applicants is available HERE These FSOs are NOT available to conduct interviews for Active Duty, Army Reserve, or 2L Intern Program positions.

Active Duty ONLY applicants must interview with an Active Duty FSO.  The FSO list will be published in July 2021.

Army Reserve ONLY applicants must interview with an Army Reserve FSO.  The FSO list will be published in July 2021.

Combined Active Duty and Army Reserve applicants must interview with an Active Duty FSO.  The FSO list will be published in July 2021.

DOCUMENTS REQUIRED FOR THE APPLICATION

  • Undergraduate, graduate, and law school transcripts.  A transcript must be submitted for each institution where a degree was earned or where a degree is currently in process.  Each transcript must be issued by the registrar and must include your name, the institution name, the degree conferred and the date conferred.  Transcripts for current law students should show the previous semester's grades and the classes currently in progress.  Transcripts MUST BE SUBMITTED BY THE APPLICANT WITHIN THE ONLINE APPLICATION.  Transcripts mailed or email to JARO will not be included in your application, and your application will be considered incomplete.
  • Resume
  • Personal statement describing your interest in the JAG Corps.  The statement must not exceed 2,500 characters (the character count includes spaces).  The statement is submitted within the application and not as a separate document.  General statements about patriotism and a desire to serve are less helpful than a compelling narrative that ties your personal experience to your future in our organization.  You may choose, for example, to discuss what attributes and skills you already have or hope to develop as a leader and an attorney that make you a good candidate for the JAG Corps.
  • Certificate of good standing if licensed to practice law.  The certificate must have been issued by the licensing authority within 6 months of the application.  A bar card is not sufficient.
  • Prior military service documents (if applicable).  Current and prior service applicants must submit all enlisted and officer evaluation reports.  Applicants who have been discharged must submit a copy of their DD Form 214 and/or discharge order(s).  Current Reserve Component officers must submit a statement of retirement points (e.g. DA Form 5016, NGB Form 23B).
  • Letters of recommendation (optional but strongly encouraged).  Up to 3 letters of recommendation may be submitted.  Recommendation letters MUST BE SUBMITTED BY THE APPLICANT WITHIN THE ONLINE APPLICATION and will not be accepted by JARO on behalf of the applicant.  Letters of recommendation should use the following address and greeting:  Judge Advocate Recruiting Office, 9275 Gunston Road, Suite 4000, Fort Belvoir, VA 22060 / "Dear President and Members of the Board."  Any letters physically mailed or emailed to JARO will be discarded.
  • Writing sample (optional).  The writing sample should not exceed 10 pages in length.
