RCSM Special Announcement 14-03 - Establishment of New Trial Defense Service 27D Positions
For over 40 years, the U.S. Army Trial Defense Service (TDS) has ensured due process for Soldiers, both in the garrison environment and combat theater of operations. Judge Advocates that provide legal counsel within TDS require Paralegal support commensurate with the complex mission, and I am pleased to announce that we have established new positions that will be added to the organization's manning structure over the next two fiscal years:
Establishment of New Trial Defense Service 27D Positions
For over 40 years, the U.S. Army Trial Defense Service (TDS) has ensured due process for Soldiers, both in the garrison environment and combat theater of operations. Judge Advocates that provide legal counsel within TDS require Paralegal support commensurate with the complex mission, and I am pleased to announce that we have established new positions that will be added to the organization's manning structure over the next two fiscal years:
Regional Defense Paralegal NCOs - 27D4O [at the Circuit level] x 8 positions
Defense Litigation NCOs - 27D3O [at select installation field offices worldwide] x 16 positions
We have teetered back and forth over the past two decades of TDS 40+ year history, and changed its paralegal NCO resources and structure to meet certain requirements. Lately, we have acknowledged gaps in support and capabilities in the delivery of legal services, and believe the establishment of these new E7 and E6 positions will help attain their mission in ways we could not before. We will update our doctrine and professional development guidance to reflect the duties and responsibilities of these new positions. This is tremendous news for TDS and will provide a superb opportunity for leaders wanting to serve within the organization, as these additions will be force multipliers for not only the JAG Corps, but most importantly for the services provided to the Soldier.
I continue to receive tremendous interest from teammates in the field with Professional Development Skill Identifiers (PDSI) in Military Justice that have a desire to serve as paralegals in TDS. As these positions are limited in quantity, I encourage you to deliberately discuss your desires with your leaders, coaches, and mentors when scoping your professional development timeline. I encourage each of you to seize the opportunity and submit applications. Each of these positions will provide growth and development as both a paralegal and a leader - offering a unique and challenging support role within our Soldier and Family legal services functional area.
Knowledge, Skills, and Behaviors for both positions, as well as application requirements, can be found attached to this special announcement.
