I am pleased to officially announce, pursuant to his nomination by the President, that the United States Senate has confirmed Colonel Matthew W. Cooper, an officer in the Army National Guard, for promotion to Brigadier General in the Reserve of the Army.
Colonel Cooper has contributed 26 years of dedicated service to our Army and Nation. His career demonstrates sustained excellence as a Judge Advocate. Matthew previously served as the Washington National Guard’s State Judge Advocate. He currently serves as the United States Property and Fiscal Officer for the Washington, Joint Force Headquarters, located at Camp Murray, Washington.
His previous military assignments include Deputy Staff Judge Advocate (SJA) and Joint SJA, Joint Force Headquarters, Camp Murray, Washington; Trial Counsel, 81st Brigade Combat Team, Seattle, Washington; Claims Attorney, Brigade Judge Advocate, and Trial Counsel, 2d Infantry Division, Fort Lewis, Washington; and Administrative Law Attorney, 555th Engineer Group, Fort Lewis, Washington. He also served as Trial Counsel and Operational Law Attorney for the 81st Brigade Combat Team, while deployed to Iraq.
Colonel Cooper received a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from the University of Montana, a Juris Doctor from the University of Montana, and a Master of Science in Strategic Studies from the U.S. Air Force Air War College. He received a direct commission to the JAG Corps in 1998.
