Bob Horalek (top left) celebrates his 15th and final year as a civilian attorney at the National Training Center and Fort Irwin by leading the OSJA on a environment law tour of "The Box" between training rotations. Military and civilian members of the OSJA are pictured here next to one of the Old Spanish Trail markers. Although the local region is rich with anthropological history dating back over 15 000 years, Captain John C. Fremont, accompanied by Kit Carson was the first member of the US Army to visit the Fort Irwin area. In 1844 Captain Fremont established a camp near Bitter Springs that served travelers on the Old Spanish Trail and later the Mormon Trail linking Salt Lake City to California.
